Filson Original Briefcase vs. Duluth Pack Field Satchel

Two American bags keep coming up when someone wants one bag for work that will still be around in twenty years. Filson's Original Briefcase is the Seattle classic in Rugged Twill and Bridle Leather. Duluth Pack's Field Satchel is a smaller canvas-and-leather bag from a Minnesota shop that has been sewing packs since 1882. They cost very different amounts and they solve slightly different problems. Here is how to choose.
The short version
If you carry a 15-inch laptop, chargers and a folder every day, buy the Filson. If you carry a tablet or a small laptop, a notebook and a lunch, and you would rather spend about half as much, buy the Duluth Pack. Both are made in the USA, both are built to be repaired instead of thrown out, and both look better scuffed than new.
Filson Original Briefcase
Filson builds the Original Briefcase from its Rugged Twill, a dense cotton twill with a light wax finish that sheds rain and stands up to being dragged across airport floors. The handles and the detachable shoulder strap are cut from Bridle Leather, the same kind of leather used for horse tack, which is why the straps soften with use instead of cracking. Inside you get organizational dividers and a space for a 15-inch laptop, and the main compartment closes with a solid brass YKK zipper under a storm flap.
The bag has a story Filson likes to tell: one customer logged more than a million miles of travel with the same Original Briefcase. Whether or not you fly that much, it tells you what the bag is built for. It holds its boxy shape, it stands up on its own under a desk, and the tan twill picks up a patina the way a good field jacket does.
The trade-offs are price and weight. At $499 it is the most expensive single piece on GANTRY, and waxed twill plus heavy leather is not a light combination. If you walk a long commute with it on one shoulder, you will notice.
Filson lists this briefcase as made in USA with imported material. That is worth knowing because a good share of Filson's line is now imported, and the briefcase is one of the pieces that is still sewn here.
Duluth Pack Field Satchel
Duluth Pack has been making canvas and leather bags in Duluth since 1882, first for people heading into the north woods. The Field Satchel keeps that look and shrinks it down for daily carry. Duluth Pack describes it as a bag that keeps the look of a book bag while being tough enough for the field.
It measures 10 inches tall, 14 inches wide and 5 inches deep, about 11 liters. Dividers inside keep papers, a tablet and smaller gear separated. The strap is mounted on the back of the bag rather than on the ends, so the satchel lies flat against your hip or back instead of swinging, which makes a real difference on a bike or a crowded train.
The bag comes in a long list of colors, from black and navy to olive drab and waxed khaki. The waxed canvas versions are the closest match to the Filson in looks and weather resistance. Standard canvas is lighter and a little softer from day one.
At $234.95 it is less than half the price of the Filson. The catch is size. Fourteen inches wide is snug for a 15-inch laptop, so measure your machine before you order. For a 13-inch laptop, a tablet or paper notebooks, it is close to perfect.

Which one fits your day
- Office, client meetings, flights: the Filson. It looks right next to a wool coat, swallows a full laptop setup, and the zipper keeps everything in when the bag tips over.
- Bike commute, campus, field work: the Duluth Pack. The flat-riding strap and the smaller footprint win.
- You want one bag for weekends too: the Duluth Pack, or step up to Duluth Pack's Sportsman's Duffel for trips and keep the satchel for the week.
Looking after canvas and leather
Both bags ask for very little. Brush dirt off once it dries rather than scrubbing it wet. Spot clean canvas with cold water and no soap, since detergent strips wax. Waxed fabric can be re-waxed every year or two when it stops beading water. Condition the leather straps a couple of times a year so they stay supple. Never put either bag in a washing machine.
The pick
Buy the Filson if you need the space and want the bag you will carry for the rest of your career. Buy the Duluth Pack Field Satchel if your load is lighter and you would rather put the other $264 toward a pair of boots.
