Put these two boots side by side and most people can't tell them apart from six feet away. Both are 6-inch lace-ups with a stitched toe cap, both come in a warm amber leather, and both are made in America. Red Wing's Iron Ranger has been the default heritage boot for years. Origin's Lincoln is the newer challenger from Maine. They feel very different on the foot, and that is what should decide it.

The short version

Buy the Iron Ranger if you want the classic, you don't mind a real break-in, and you like the idea of a boot that can be resoled for decades. Buy the Lincoln if you want a toe-cap boot that feels good in the first week, or if you need a wide fit. Right now the Lincoln is also cheaper: $309, down from $359, against $349.99 for the Red Wing.

Red Wing first built the Iron Ranger for iron miners in northern Minnesota in the 1930s, and the toe cap was there to protect the front of the boot. The 8111 in Amber Harness leather is the version most people picture. It is made in the USA with a Goodyear leather welt, which means the sole is stitched to a strip of leather rather than glued, so a cobbler can replace it when it wears down. Red Wing runs its own repair service for exactly that reason.

The boot sits on Red Wing's No. 8 last, which has a rounded bump toe and fits a wide range of foot shapes. Steel speed hooks up top make lacing quick. A Vibram lug outsole handles wet sidewalks and gravel well and gives the boot a slightly chunkier look.

The trade-off is the break-in. Harness leather is thick and stiff out of the box, and most owners give the Iron Ranger two to four weeks of short wears before it stops biting at the heel and flex point. After that it molds to your foot and stays that way. Red Wing sizing also runs large for many people, so a lot of buyers go a half size down from their sneaker size. Try them on in a Red Wing store if you can.

Origin Lincoln Boot

Origin Lincoln Boot
Origin Lincoln Boot, $309. Toe-cap boot in American leather, natural cork midsole, standard lug sole, D and EE widths. Shop at Origin

Origin builds its boots in Maine, and the Lincoln is its take on the same military and work toe-cap lineage. Origin built it on the lifestyle last it uses for the Statesman Chelsea and the Coronado, a shape designed to feel comfortable from the start rather than after weeks of breaking in. A natural cork midsole slowly takes the shape of your foot, so the fit gets better the more you walk.

The details are practical. Waxed flat laces stay tied, low-profile flat grommets keep the laces from chewing up the tongue, and the stitching is reinforced throughout. The leather is American, finished to age and darken rather than scuff and crack. A standard lug sole gives it a footprint close to the Iron Ranger's.

The Lincoln's quiet advantage is width. Origin sells it in Regular D and Wide EE in most sizes, so men with wide feet can get a proper fit instead of sizing up in length.

Which one fits how you live

What to wear them with

Both boots look right with a straight, heavy jean that breaks just at the top of the boot. The Origin Maverick is a natural partner for either. Add a thick leather belt like the Hanks Everyday and wool socks, and you have a working outfit that goes from the job site to dinner.

Care

Brush off dirt after wear, let wet boots dry at room temperature away from heaters, and condition the leather every couple of months, or sooner if you wear them in snow and salt. Cedar shoe trees help both boots keep their shape. When the lugs wear flat, take them to a cobbler instead of buying new.

The pick

The Iron Ranger is still the benchmark, and it earns its price over a decade of resoles. If you can't stand a break-in, or the sale holds, the Lincoln gets you the same look with more comfort from day one.
